Fairytales Research - Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red Riding Hood.
Little Red Riding Hood is about a girl who walks through the dangerous woods to deliver food to her sick grandmother, but The Big Bad Wolf eats her grandmother before Red Riding Hood gets there, and he dresses up as her, pretending to be her, so he can eat her too. He eventually eats her, but a lumberjack comes to her rescue and cuts the wolf open.

The origins of the fairytale can be traced from various European countries, mostly 17th century, where some versions are very different from the most known, Grimms-inspired version. It was told by French peasants in the 14th century as well as in Italy, where a number of versions exist, including La finta nonna (The False Grandmother). It's also been called "The Story of Grandmother".
These early variations of the tale differ from the currently known version in several ways. The antagonist is not always a wolf, but sometimes an ogre or a werewolf, making these tales relevant to the werewolf-trials (similar to witch trials) of the time. The wolf usually leaves the grandmother’s blood and meat for the girl to eat, who then cannibalizes her own grandmother. The wolf was also known to ask her to remove her clothing and toss it into the fire. In some versions, the wolf eats the girl after she gets into bed with him, and the story ends there. In others, she sees through his disguise and tries to escape, complaining to her "grandmother" that she needs to defecate and would not want to in the bed. The wolf lets her go, but ties her to a piece of string so she doesn't get away. However, the girl slips the string off and runs off.
In these stories she escapes with no help from any male or older female figure, instead using her own cunning. Sometimes though, the red hood doesn't exist.
There have been many different adaptations of the fairytale.

As well as loads of various novels about the story, both old and new, there have also been films and animations made about it. Red Riding Hood is also used in other forms of media, including television adverts, comics and music videos.
The most current and high budget film made about the fairytale is called Red Riding Hood, starring Amanda Seyfried who plays Red Riding Hood, and this film is based completely around the story.
The character Red Riding Hood is also given a cameo in the Shrek Films.

The main target audience for the Red Riding Hood fairytale is children.
But this is going by the fairytale. The later film adaptations of it is possibly more suited to older viewers, because of the violence.
I would say the target audience is mixed, depending on the version of the story. It might scare some younger viewers/readers, but depending on the context it's in.

Photos

Today, we experimented with a Nikon D70 camera, trying out a whole bunch of different settings on it, to get the best effects for the photos we were after.

We had to get macro shots, motion shots, and distant shots.
We took various photos zooming in and out, changing the resolution of the lens to get the best shots.

We picked our favourite photos after uploading them to the Macs via USB, and edited them in photoshop, changing the colour and backgrounds.
We then printed the photos and edits off and stuck them in our sketch books with annotation.

LION KING

I had to post this, because Lion King is great, and i wish i could animate like that.

Critique - Neighbours

The film, created by Norman McClaren, with the original story about two men who lived in harmony, until a flower blossomed in between their houses. They fought over who could have the flower, but in the end, they destroyed it, and hurt each other.

There are no special effects, apart from the film uses pixilation, an animation technique using live actors as stop-motion objects.
The theme of the film is about two men who had peace but destroyed it because they couldn't share.

McLaren created the soundtrack of the film by scratching the edge of the film, creating various blobs, lines, and triangles which the projector read as sound.
It helps create the good atmosphere for the film.

Critique - Her Morning Elegance

The stop motion animation, created by Oren Lavie, is an original concept, and it's fairly new.
It's about a young woman sleepwalking on her bed and dreaming about various things. Her dreams are acted out by numerous different objects, such as pillows and instruments.
The subject matter is continuously shown throughout the video, seen to be dreaming about walking down a street and floating objects.

The only special effects used are things like pillows and sheets being made into different things like clouds and wind. The video took a total of 48 hours to make in total, without breaks.
The theme of the animation was about dreams, and sleepwalking.
The setting, being a bed, was perfect for the animation in my opinion, because it helped to highlight the meaning of the theme.
They made sure the use of lighting was appropriate and a constant throughout the whole video, which i can imagine would be hard doing over 48 hours with no breaks.

The song is great for the animation, and the video was actually created to accompany the song.
It helps set the purpose of the video.
There is only one camera angle throughout the entire thing. It makes sure the view of the ned is the main focus, and blocks out any distractions.

Flip Book.

Today in college, we had the task of creating a flip book.
I mind mapped some ideas, including zombies, Batman, fireworks and fish, to help decide what i'd do for the final product. I based the flip book around moving fish.

We each got a small flip book which we could draw in.
I used pencil to sketch the outline of the fish, and finished up the design by going over it in fine liner pen.

The hardest thing was deciding how advanced to make the fish look.
In the end, i decided to draw simple fish, because it would be easier for the time limit we had.
I've learnt how to create drawings and turn them into a simple motion.

But next time, if i had more time on the task, i would make sure the fish were drawn well, not just simple, and i would add colour to make it less bland.
