Fairytales Research - Shrek.

Shrek is a 2001 film about an ogre and a donkey who go on a quest, sent by Lord Farquaad after winning a tournament. Their quest involves them having to travel to a castle, guarded by a dragon, in order to rescue the sleeping princess Fiona, so Lord Farquaad can marry her. As a reward, Lord Farquaad will remove all of the fairytale creatures he sent to Shrek's house, so he can live in peace again.

As the story is fairly new, there is no history behind it.
It's loosely based on William Steig's 1990 fairy tale picture book with the same name.
However, the film does use cameos of various different characters from different fairytales, and portrays them as if they are from versions of stories they are best known from. The film more or less parodies these characters, making it interesting to watch.

Again, the story is fairly new, so there are no other adaptations of it.
Though there have been sequel films made, using the same characters from different fairytales as before.
There's loads of different versions of media that have been used to tell the story, such as a mini series of comic books, a musical, and the most popular version of video games.
Video games not only tell the story as you go along, but makes a range of different people playable, so you can get a bit into their background story.

The target audience for Shrek is young people, but it's also enjoyed by older people as well.
There's nothing too dark or inappropriate about it, even the characters look friendly, despite some of them being percieved as evil.
